School Library - Media and Information Technology Certification

Establishing a License as Teacher of Library Media

You do NOT hold a teaching license, follow this program

those who need to establish a teaching license for the first time, the following program normally will meet such requirements.

Completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college.

- Completion of 15 credits in Educational Methods and Issues.
One 3 credit class from:
P515 Child Development OR
P516 Adolescent Development OR
P544 Applied Cognition

One 3 credit class from:
H520 Education and Social Issues OR
H530 Philosophy of Education OR
H504 History of American Education

One 3 credit class from:
S503 Secondary School Curriculum OR
E535 Elementary School Curriculum

One 3 credit class from:
L545 Advanced Study of Teaching Elementary Reading OR
L517 Advanced Study in Teaching of Reading

One 3 credit class from:
S574 Information Inquiry for School Teachers
(Can also count for MLS or MIS credit)

-Completion of the School Media Major list courses including:
S504 - Cataloging
S501 - Reference
S554 - Library Systems
S502 - Collection Development and Management
S571 - Materials for Youth
S574 - Information Inquiry for School Teachers
S671 - School Media
S506 - Introduction to Research and Statistics (or L651)
Plus 12 approved electives related to school media.

- Complete student teaching in a school library media program under the supervision of a school media specialist, licensed by the state.

Ten (10) credits of M482 All Grades student teaching in School Media are to be completed with experiences in both elementary and secondary school settings. If the student completes a 3 credit internship in school media at the same time as student teaching, the student may enroll in 7 credits for M550.
