Three faculty in the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science at Indianapolis were selected for Trustee Teaching Awards in 2004-2005.
Clinical Teaching Division
Carol I. Tilley, Lecturer and Coordinator for Distance Education. Carol has been an innovative teacher in the development of distance education delivery from the IUPUI campus. She has been successful in presenting courses over interactive television, including "information sources and services" and "library materials for children and young adults." Her interactive broadcasts are received at South Bend, Gary and Fort Wayne. In addition, she has designed an online workshop in grant writing. Offered annually, the grant development course has helped several SLIS students win awards. Carol has teamed with Jean Preer to provide professional development sessions for adjunct faculty on the IUPUI campus. She also participated in the core course review for SLIS in preparing for the recent re-accreditation visit.
Junior Tenure-Track Faculty
Jennifer Burek Pierce, Assistant Professor. Jennifer has established a working relationship with several of the librarians at the IUPUI University Library for the purpose of gathering data through user surveys. This and other projects are used for practical application to teach the basic research methods course at Indianapolis. Jennifer has also served as the Indianapolis faculty representative on the SLIS Curriculum Steering Committee. She has developed a special topics course in community health information documents. Jennifer took a leadership role in the review of core course content prior to the re-accreditation visit. She as also been active in working with Kathy Schilling to establish a plan for a dual degree program between SLIS and Medical Informatics at IUPUI. Her state service has helped several SLIS adjuncts at Indianapolis publish in the association journal of the Indiana Library Federation. She has served as a mentor for professional writing and communication.
Senior Tenure-Track Faculty
Jean Preer, Associate Professor. Jean came to the Indianapolis program in 2002 after 15 years of successful teaching and administration work at the School of Library and Information Science, Catholic University, Washington, D.C. Dr. Preer was recently selected as one of 12 "Favorite Professors" of all-time by the Catholic University Alumni Magazine. Wrote one former student, "When I started law school, instructors informed me that I would learn to ‘think like a lawyer.' No one gave me similar warnings for library school. Nevertheless, when I look back on Dr. Preer's patience, at her passion and her determination to address each of her students as professionals, I realize that library school transformed me more than any of my previous educational experiences." Jean now delivers "collection development and management" over interactive television each year from IUPUI. She is the advisor for students seeking management roles and offers a regular course that helps new students determine a professional career track. Her personal advising is often noted as "extremely valuable." Initiatives have included development of two new dual degree programs, one between SLIS and the IUPUI Law School with emphasis on intellectual property, and a second with the Center on Philanthropic Studies. This is the first, and only, dual graduate degree between philanthropic studies and library science in the nation. Jean has also established a special topics course in fundraising for public and academic librarians.
